Published October 12, 2026. This is a field guide to Nasdaq’s opening-auction NOII feed, not a forecast of where a stock will open or a recommendation to trade an imbalance.

What NOII tells you before the opening cross#

Nasdaq’s Net Order Imbalance Indicator (NOII) is auction information disseminated ahead of the Opening Cross. It reports calculated prices and share quantities that help describe the state of the auction at a particular moment. The values are indications that can change as eligible orders and market conditions change; they are not a commitment that the cross will execute at a displayed price or quantity. The NASDAQ Opening and Closing Crosses https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdf

A useful first distinction: “indicative clearing price” is often used casually to refer to an auction price indication, but NOII has separate fields. Current Reference Price anchors its paired- and imbalance-share calculations. Near Price and Far Price are two hypothetical crossing prices calculated with different sets of eligible interest. They are not three versions of one guaranteed opening price. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdf

Use the table as a decoder, not a scorecard. The meaning of a field depends on the moment it was published and on the eligible interest included in Nasdaq’s calculation.

NOII fieldHow to read itWhat not to infer
Current Reference PriceThe reference price at which the displayed paired shares and imbalance shares are calculated. Nasdaq’s specifications define this field and how it is used in NOII. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdfIt is not a promise that the Opening Cross will print at this price.
Paired SharesThe number of shares that can be paired at the Current Reference Price under the auction calculation. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdfDo not treat the displayed quantity as a guaranteed execution or as a prediction of total opening volume.
Imbalance SharesThe number of shares left unpaired at the Current Reference Price. Read this value together with Imbalance Direction. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdfA number without its side is incomplete; it does not alone say whether unmatched interest is to buy or sell.
Imbalance Direction / SideThe feed indicates the side or state of the imbalance: B means buy, S means sell, N means no imbalance, O means insufficient orders to calculate, and P means paused. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdfThese are feed codes, not signals or recommendations.
Near PriceAlso called the Near Indicative Clearing Price: a hypothetical crossing price that includes eligible opening-book interest and continuous-book interest in Nasdaq’s calculation. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdfIt is not the same calculation as Far Price and is not a forecast.
Far PriceAlso called the Far Indicative Clearing Price: a hypothetical crossing price based on eligible cross/opening-book orders, excluding continuous-book interest included in the Near Price calculation. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdfDo not assume it is a more reliable prediction merely because it uses a different order set.

Timing matters: early-window values can differ#

Nasdaq describes opening-cross imbalance information as disseminated from 9:25 to 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Its NOII specification describes updates every 10 seconds from 9:25 to 9:28 a.m., then every second from 9:28 to 9:30 a.m. The NASDAQ Opening and Closing Crosses https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdf

There is an important caveat when interpreting Near and Far early in that window. Nasdaq’s implementation notice says that from 9:25 to 9:28 a.m., the early information includes paired shares, imbalance shares, imbalance direction, and Current Reference Price, while Near and Far are populated with zero; Near and Far are published beginning at 9:28 a.m. Equity Trader Alert #2021 - 6 Nasdaq to Implement Enhancements to the Opening Cross Process A zero displayed in that context should not automatically be read as a meaningful hypothetical price. If your platform displays a blank, dash, or zero, record what it actually shows and check how that vendor represents unavailable fields.

A repeatable observation routine makes the feed easier to interpret and your notes easier to audit. Nasdaq’s update cadence changes during the dissemination window, so include timestamps rather than treating the display as a single static reading. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdf

  1. Record the symbol, date, observation time in Eastern Time, and the feed or platform used. Keep the time with every snapshot; a value without a timestamp is hard to compare.
  2. Write down Current Reference Price, Paired Shares, Imbalance Shares, and Imbalance Side as separate fields. Do not combine imbalance size and side into one shorthand.
  3. Record Near Price and Far Price independently. If the early-window feed reports zero or your platform shows a blank, preserve that display rather than silently treating it as a usable price.
  4. Take additional observations if you are studying change through the auction window. Compare like with like: note the interval, and distinguish an actual reported zero from a missing or unavailable display.
  5. After the cross, compare your recorded indications with the opening execution only as a review of what the feed showed—not as proof that a field predicts the result.

Use one row per observation. Leave a field blank if it is not displayed; write zero only when zero is what the feed reports. The final column can capture a pause, an unavailable price, a vendor display convention, or another note needed to interpret the snapshot.

Frequently asked questions#

Is Current Reference Price the same as the Near Price?

Current Reference Price is the price used to calculate displayed paired shares and imbalance shares. Near and Far are separate hypothetical crossing-price calculations using different eligible interest. None should be treated as a guaranteed opening print. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdf

Are Paired Shares and Imbalance Shares two names for the same quantity?

No. Paired Shares is the quantity that can be paired at the Current Reference Price under the auction calculation. Imbalance Shares is the quantity left unpaired at that price; use the side code to identify the direction or state. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdf

Why might Near Price and Far Price show zero before 9:28?

Nasdaq’s implementation notice says Near and Far are populated with zero from 9:25 to 9:28 a.m. and published beginning at 9:28 a.m. Do not assume an early zero means a usable calculated price. Equity Trader Alert #2021 - 6 Nasdaq to Implement Enhancements to the Opening Cross Process

What do the NOII side codes mean?

B denotes buy imbalance, S sell imbalance, N no imbalance, O insufficient orders to calculate, and P paused in Nasdaq’s NOII specification. Preserve the code and interpret it as feed state, not as a trade instruction. https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdf

Does NOII guarantee the opening price?

No. NOII reports auction indications and calculated quantities that can change. The Opening Cross determines the execution price under Nasdaq’s rules; a displayed indication is not a guarantee. The NASDAQ Opening and Closing Crosses https://nasdaqtrader.com/content/technicalsupport/specifications/dataproducts/NOIViewSpecification.pdf

NOII is most useful here as a structured snapshot of auction conditions. Read fields according to their definitions, preserve the observation time, and avoid turning an imbalance or hypothetical price into a standalone market call.

A balanced takeaway

Useful for

  • ✓Separating the reference price, paired quantity, unmatched quantity, and Near/Far calculations clarifies what each field describes.
  • ✓A timestamped worksheet can make observations comparable and help prevent missing or unavailable displays from being mistaken for meaningful values.

Limitations

  • —Indications can change before the cross and are not guaranteed executions or price forecasts.
  • —The fields require timestamps and context; early-window Near and Far values have a specific zero-display caveat.
